Troubleshooting Internet Issues

This guide will help you to check your network connectivity. Poor internet connectivity can be caused by a range of different issues, the below guide will assist you in improving your network connectivity.

Use this guide if you are experiencing the following:

  • Network connection issues.
  • Poor Audio quality when working from home.
  • Slow Internet connection.

  • Things to Check:

    1. Have you restarted your computer recently?
  • If not, the computer may have a lot of short term memory banked up causing it to perform slowly, try restarting your computer first.
  • 2. Is anyone else working from home?
  • If yes, there may be extra pressure on your internet connection, try closing any web pages of applications that you don't need right now. This could reduce the pressure on your service.
  • 3. Do you have children using the internet for School?
  • Similarly, the type of resources could be causing high internet use, if possible, try closing any apps or web pages that are not currently needed.
  • 4. Is anyone in your household using a streaming service such as Foxtel, Disney+, Netflix, Stan etc?
  • Streaming services use a high percentage of internet bandwidth. If you can, close the applications, turn them off or run them from your sim card instead of using the WiFi.
  • 5. Is anyone in the house online gaming?
  • Just like streaming services, online gaming can use a high percentage of internet bandwidth. If you can, try to close the game or turn the console off.
  • 6. Is anyone streaming videos online, for example YouTube?
  • Streaming videos can also use a high percentage of internet bandwidth. Try switching to a sim card if you are using a phone or tablet.
  • 7. Is anyone in the household downloading videos, updates or software?
  • If yes, try and pause the downloads until work hours, they should also download quicker for you.
  • 8. Have you restarted your home WiFi router recently?
  • Just like your computer or phone, sometimes technology just needs a quick reboot to work better. If you're not sure how to do this and were provided with a manual, follow the instructions given to you.

  • If none of the above have helped and you are still having issues try the following:

    1. Try restarting your computer.

    2. Try restarting your router.

    3. Check what kind of internet connection you are using (ADSL, NBN, etc)

    4. Check if there are any outages in your area by going to Downdetector.

    5. Check your internet speed at Speedtest.net.

Run a speedtest and take note of the download, Upload and 'ping values'

  • Your optimum download and upload speeds will be based on your current internet plan. Example: If I have a 25MBPS plan, my ideal speed should be somewhere near the 20MBPS+ mark.
  • A lower ping count means you have better connection; it is ideal for the ping to be under 20 ms.

  • If the speedtest shows significantly different values to those in your internet plan, call your Internet Service Provider
